FPI inspectors are already in Maine homes every day. Add PFAS testing to your inspection β€” no extra scheduling.

What Are PFAS β€” and Why Should You Test?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals found in everything from nonstick cookware to firefighting foam. They don’t break down in the environment or the human body β€” that’s why they’re called “forever chemicals.”

Maine has one of the most serious PFAS contamination problems in the country. Decades of sewage sludge spread on farmland, firefighting foam at military installations, and landfill leachate have contaminated groundwater across the state. The Maine DEP has identified over 1,066 sites under investigation.

Standard well water tests do not check for PFAS. Your water could test clean for bacteria, nitrates, and metals β€” and still contain elevated levels of forever chemicals. The only way to know is a dedicated PFAS test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need PFAS testing if I’m on city water?

Generally, no. Municipal water systems are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and are required to test for PFAS. This service is designed for homes on private wells, which are not covered by those regulations.

What’s the difference between EasyCheck and Accredited?

EasyCheck is a screening test that tells you whether PFAS is present at detectable levels. Accredited is a full EPA-method laboratory analysis that quantifies individual PFAS compounds. Most homebuyers and sellers start with EasyCheck. Accredited is recommended when you need documentation for lenders, attorneys, regulatory compliance, or landlord obligations.

What happens if my test shows elevated PFAS levels?

We deliver your results with clear reference points from Maine’s interim standard and federal EPA limits. If levels are elevated, we recommend consulting a qualified water treatment professional for filtration options and your real estate attorney if you’re in a transaction.

Is PFAS testing required in Maine?

Not yet for most transactions, but the regulatory direction is clear. Maine’s legislature passed LD 493 requiring landlord testing and seller disclosure, and LD 500 added PFAS to the state’s recommended testing list. The standard of care is shifting β€” agents and buyers who test now are ahead of the curve.

How long does the test take on-site?

If added to an inspection, sample collection takes about 10–15 minutes. For standalone appointments, plan for 20–30 minutes of on-site time.
