Understanding Radon Risk in North Carolina and Maine
Radon concentrations vary significantly by geography. North Carolina’s Piedmont and mountain regions carry elevated radon risk due to underlying granite formations. Maine, with its glacial soils and granite bedrock, is one of the higher-risk radon states in the country. Elevated radon has been documented in every county in both states — which is why testing is recommended regardless of location or home age.
The EPA action level for radon is 4 pCi/L. At or above this threshold, mitigation is recommended. Many buyers are surprised to learn that levels above the action level are found in a significant percentage of homes tested — including newer construction, which is not inherently safer than older homes.
