Radon Air Testing is an air quality test used to identify the presence of Radon, measured in Picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Radon can enter the home through small cracks or holes in the foundation. Homes that are built near deposits of granite and or ledge are more susceptible to higher radon levels than those built in sandy or clay like soils. It is recommended that every home be tested for radon. Radon levels will fluctuate over the course of the year and are generally higher during the heating season.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed by the decay of uranium in rock, soil, and water. According to the EPA, Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year.
Why should I test for Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Radon can also enter your home through well water. Your home can trap radon inside.
Any home can have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. In fact, you and your family are most likely to get your greatest radiation exposure at home. That is where you spend most of your time.” *EPA 402/K-13/002/MARCH 2018 (revised) www.epa.gov/radon
